Sho Dan

(First Degree Black Belt)

Pre-requisites

  • A financial member in long standing with the Kyushin Ryu School of Jujitsu
  • A person of high moral character
  • A sound level of fitness
  • The holder of a Brown Belt 1st Kyu
  • A keen participant in regular training sessions for a minimum of 12 months since attaining 1st Kyu
  • An active participant in School activities, who regularly assists higher grades in the conduct of classes
  • A person of or above the age of 16 years
  • An Accredited NCAP Coach

The grading panel for Sho Dan and above must consist of a minimum of three examiners. The Principal of the School shall be the Chairperson, and at least one other Panel Member shall hold at least one rank higher than the level to be attained by the candidate. A successful pass shall exist only where the Chairperson and at least one other nominated panel member concur.

The various Parts to a black belt grading may be conducted during one or more sessions at a time, at the discretion of the Panel Chairperson – taking into account the age and physical capabilities of the candidate.

Part A – Theoretical Knowledge

A.1

Provide a paper of not less than 500 words on any aspect of Jujitsu which clearly demonstrates an in-depth knowledge of the subject

A.2

Provide a summary of personal involvement in the administration of the Kyushin Ryu School of Jujitsu which demonstrates the candidate’s dedication to the art of Jujitsu

A.3

Demonstrate and explain the bio-mechanics of:

  • One throwing technique
  • One takedown technique
  • One punching technique
  • One kicking technique

Part B – Practical Knowledge

B.1

Demonstrate an in-depth understanding and practical ability in the art of break-falling techniques

B.2

Demonstrate the effective application of the following:

All techniques may be requested to be performed on right and/or left side

All techniques performed from a standing position may be selected at random by the Panel Chairperson to be demonstrated to follow on to an appropriate technique on the ground

Part C – Technical Knowledge

  • Kyushin Jitsu Kata

  • Nage no Kata (First 3 Sets)

Part D – Application of knowledge

D.1

In the standing position, demonstrate appropriate counters and control of an aggressor in the following situations:

  • Front strangle
  • Front wrist grasps
  • Front arm grasps
  • Front arm and body hug
  • Front bear hug
  • Front head lock
  • Front grip to clothing
  • Front punch to the head
  • Front kick to the groin

D.2

In the standing position, demonstrate appropriate counters and control of an aggressor in the following situations:

  • Side head lock
  • Rear strangle
  • Rear arms and body hug
  • Rear bear hug
  • Rear full-nelson hold

D.3

In the standing position, demonstrate appropriate counters and control of an aggressor in the following situations:

  • Bottle attack from the front
  • Club attack from the front
  • Knife attack from the front
  • Sword attack from the front
  • Gun attack from the front
  • Gun attack from the rear

D.4

From a position on the ground, demonstrate appropriate counters and control of an aggressor in the following situations:

  • Attempted punch to the body
  • Attempted kick to the body or head
  • Attempted strike to the body with a club

D.5

From the standing position, demonstrate appropriate defences to multiple attacks from 2, 3 or 4 aggressors as directed by the Panel Chairperson
